About RHCI

Rheumatic Heart Club is a nongovernmental organization ( NGO) of patients with Rheumatic Fever (RF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) and doctors involved in the treatment of these patients.  Rheumatic Heart Club was started in Kerala under  the department of cardiology and cardithoracic surgery at Kottayam Medical College in the year 1997. The idea of Rheumatic Heart Club was put forward by Dr S AbdulKhadar and it was supported by Prof.  Dr. Rajan Manjuran ,Prof .Dr P  Chandra Mohan and Prof.N Sudayakumar.

Major Objectives 

  • Prevention of RF
  • Control of RHD

Minor Objectives  

  • Mass campaign against RF and RHD
  • Education of patients and Relatives about RF and RHD
  • Help and motivate the patients for valve surgery when required
  • Rehabilitation of the patients
  • Motivate the government, Media, Social organization and Philanthropists to support the RHD patients
  • Yearly family get-together of patients and doctors
  • Give Hridaya puraskaram to persons involved the scientific research, treatment and support of the prevention and control of RF and RHD.
  • Continuing Medical Education program for doctors and health workers.

Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease affects the world’s most vulnerable  communities particularly targets  children, young adults and women.

This preventable disease affects over 33 million people around the world killing 27500 patients each year.  Around 0.5 million new cases are detected every year. A total of 2.4 million children of 5 to 15 years are affected in an year.  However developed countries like US ,Canada , Europe have successfully eradicate it by 1980.
